Qualified to Serve... Acts 6

Feb 8, 2026    Kent Smith

In Acts 6, we see that growth in the church, while a sign of God’s blessing, also creates real challenges. As the number of disciples increased, practical needs surfaced—people felt overlooked, resources were stretched thin, and complaints arose. Rather than ignoring the problem or allowing division to grow, the apostles modeled wise leadership by prioritizing the need, seeking qualified, Spirit-filled servants, and delegating responsibility. The result was not decline, but greater effectiveness: the gospel continued to spread, the number of disciples multiplied, and many became obedient to the faith. At the same time, this growth fueled opposition, particularly against Stephen, whose Spirit-given wisdom and power could not be refuted. Unable to counter the truth, his opponents resorted to false accusations and manipulation. Yet even in the face of hostility, Stephen’s countenance reflected God’s presence—his face appearing like that of an angel—reminding us that those who are qualified to serve are marked not only by faithfulness in ministry, but by Christlike character in adversity.
